A striking mid-19th-century icon depicting The Resurrection of Christ, represented in a distinctive Western-influenced composition. Christ rises triumphantly above the open tomb within a radiant mandorla, while an angel sits beside the sepulchre and Roman soldiers appear below, witnessing the miraculous event. Hand-painted in tempera on levkas on an original wooden panel, the icon is distinguished by its extensive gilded background, expressive figures, and beautifully rendered landscape of rolling hills and vegetation. The contrasting black armor and red headwear of the Roman guards, together with the luminous gold surrounding Christ, create a particularly dramatic and visually impressive composition reflecting the Western influence found within 19th-century Russian and Eastern European religious painting. The icon retains its authentic historical character, displaying a naturally aged surface and period patina. The substantial wooden panel shows considerable evidence of age and structural movement, while the surviving gilding, traditional painted details, craquelure, and natural surface wear further reflect its long devotional history. Condition: Overall antique condition considering its age, with age-related wear, craquelure, scattered paint and ground losses, abrasions, and losses to portions of the gilded surface. A pronounced vertical structural split runs through the central section of the wooden panel and composition. Evidence of historical conservation may be present. Despite its age and structural wear, the principal composition remains beautifully preserved, expressive, and visually impressive.
