A remarkable 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow,” one of the most cherished and spiritually significant Marian images in Russian Orthodoxy. The crowned Mother of God stands majestically at the center holding the Christ Child, surrounded by the suffering and those seeking consolation, while angels offer divine assistance beneath the blessing of God the Father above. Hand-painted in traditional egg tempera on an original wooden panel, the icon presents an elaborate narrative composition enriched with warm ochre, red, and deep green tones, gilded and metallic details, traditional inscriptions, and finely arranged groups of figures. The numerous angels, supplicants, and inscribed scrolls emphasize the icon’s message of consolation, healing, mercy, and heavenly intercession. Attributed to the Russian School of the 19th century, the icon retains a powerful historical character with an attractive aged patina and extensive evidence of devotional use.
