A beautifully preserved Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Kozelshchanskaya Mother of God, a deeply venerated Marian image distinguished by its intimate representation of the Virgin with the Christ Child reclining across her lap. The chalice and spoon depicted at the lower left add important Eucharistic symbolism to this distinctive composition. Hand-painted on an original wooden panel, the icon is enriched by finely executed radiant gilded halos, delicate ornamental details, and the Virgin’s deep blue mantle decorated with stars. The graceful modeling of the faces and refined treatment of the garments reflect the elegant academic influence characteristic of Russian icon painting during the late Imperial period. The icon is preserved within an impressive antique glazed wooden kiot with a broad gilded interior frame. It retains its authentic historical character, displaying an attractive aged patina, scattered surface wear, and evidence of historical conservation while preserving the beautifully expressive faces of the Mother of God and Christ Child. Condition: Overall good antique condition with age-related wear, scattered paint losses and abrasions, craquelure, darkening, and areas of historical conservation/restoration. The antique wooden kiot shows natural wear and losses to the gilded and painted surfaces, retaining its authentic historical character.
