A magnificent 19th-century Russian icon depicting Christ Pantocrator, also known as the Lord Almighty (Господь Вседержитель), one of the most significant representations of Christ in traditional Russian religious art. Christ is portrayed frontally with a serene and contemplative expression, raising His right hand in blessing while holding an open Gospel book in His left. The cruciform halo surrounding His head bears the traditional sacred inscriptions, while the open Gospel displays carefully executed Church Slavonic lettering. His solemn presence, expressive facial features, and richly decorated surroundings create a powerful devotional composition symbolizing divine authority, wisdom, and eternal salvation. Hand-painted in tempera on levkas on a substantial wooden panel, the icon is distinguished by its exceptionally elaborate gilded background, intricate geometric ornamentation, and richly decorated interlaced borders. The finely patterned gold surface features repeated diamond-shaped motifs, delicate engraved-style detailing, and ornamental accents in red and blue. Christ’s dark blue and black outer garments, highlighted with elegant golden lines, contrast beautifully with the vibrant red inner robe and luminous gilded surroundings. The carefully modelled facial features and sophisticated decorative treatment reflect the artistic traditions of 19th-century Russian icon painting. Dating to the 19th century, the icon retains its distinctive historical character, displaying a naturally aged surface and period patina. The substantial wooden panel shows considerable evidence of age, with darkened wood, surface irregularities, old markings, and visible structural wear on the reverse. The surviving gilding, intricate ornamental details, subtle craquelure, and naturally worn edges further emphasize the icon’s historical character. Its richly decorated composition and refined artistic execution make it a particularly striking example of traditional Russian devotional painting. Condition: Overall good antique condition considering its age, with age-related surface wear, scattered abrasions, localized paint and ground losses, and areas of deterioration along the gilded borders and decorative background. A visible horizontal surface line crosses the lower portion of Christ’s face, potentially associated with an old crack, abrasion, or historical conservation. The wooden panel displays natural irregularities, darkening, small holes, and signs of structural wear, including a rectangular area on the reverse that may represent an earlier repair. Evidence of historical restoration or localized retouching may be present. Despite these age-related characteristics, the principal composition remains beautifully preserved, with Christ’s expressive facial features, finely executed garments, open Gospel, and elaborate gilded ornamentation retaining their strong visual appeal.
