A remarkable 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Mother of God of Bogolyubsk standing in prayer before Christ, who appears above in the heavens. Before her is an extensive gathering of selected saints, hierarchs, martyrs, and holy figures, forming a richly detailed composition centered on prayer and intercession. Hand-painted in traditional egg tempera on an original wooden panel, the icon features a luminous metallic ground, traditionally described as silver beneath a warm golden-colored varnish. The numerous individually depicted saints, Church Slavonic inscriptions, delicate halos, and carefully arranged figures demonstrate the character and craftsmanship of 19th-century Russian icon painting. The icon retains its strong historical character, displaying an attractive aged patina and extensive evidence of natural wear accumulated over generations. Its unusually populated composition, devotional significance, and impressive visual presence make it a distinctive example of Russian Orthodox ecclesiastical art and an appealing addition to a serious icon collection. Condition: Overall good antique condition with age-related surface wear, scattered paint losses and abrasions, craquelure, darkening and wear to the metallic ground, and evidence of historical conservation/restoration. The original wooden panel shows natural signs of age while retaining its authentic historical character.
