An impressive mid-19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saint George the Great Martyr and Victory-Bearer, one of the most revered warrior saints in Orthodox Christianity. Saint George is shown mounted on a white horse, defeating the dragon, while the princess stands before the fortified city and a divine figure appears from Heaven above. The composition symbolizes the triumph of faith, courage, and good over evil. Hand-painted in traditional egg tempera on gesso (levkas) over an original wooden panel, the icon features a gold-toned background and a richly detailed narrative composition. The striking white horse, architectural elements, expressive figures, and traditional palette reflect the distinctive craftsmanship of mid-19th-century Russian icon painting. The icon retains a powerful historical presence with an authentic aged patina. The highly desirable Saint George subject, detailed narrative composition, and substantial antique panel make this a distinctive and collectible example of Russian Orthodox devotional art. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear, surface abrasions, scattered paint and gilding losses, and evidence of historical woodworm activity. The original wooden panel retains two transverse battens and shows age-related structural wear, including an old split and losses along the right side. Possible historical conservation or retouching may be present.
