An antique Russian Menologion icon depicting the liturgical calendar of saints and feast days, arranged across four horizontal registers. Numerous sacred figures and commemorative scenes remain visible throughout the composition, creating a remarkably atmospheric testimony to private devotion and the passage of time. Executed in tempera on a prepared wooden panel, the icon retains traces of its original gold-toned ground and deep red, ochre and dark pigments. The composition is surrounded by an impressive embossed copper-alloy metal border, richly decorated with repeated crosses and scrolling foliate ornament. The traditionally constructed wooden panel and substantial transverse battens further reflect its historic craftsmanship. The icon displays a particularly powerful aged surface, with extensive natural abrasion, darkening of the old surface coating, losses and oxidation accumulated over generations. The figures have become partially obscured through this prolonged deterioration, giving the icon its distinctive ancient character. UV examination shows no obvious evidence of extensive modern overpainting, although localized historic restoration or retouching cannot be excluded. Condition: Extensive age-related wear, darkening, abrasions and losses to the painted and gold-toned surfaces, with oxidation and wear to the decorative metal surround. The icon remains in a heavily time-worn state consistent with its considerable age. Please refer to the photographs for full condition details.
