A remarkable Russian icon depicting The Vision of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, one of the most significant episodes associated with the revered Russian saint. According to tradition, while Saint Sergius was praying during the night, a brilliant heavenly light appeared and the Mother of God came before him accompanied by the Apostles Saint Peter and Saint John. She assured Sergius that his prayers for his disciples and monastery had been heard and promised her continuing protection over his spiritual community. The icon is traditionally hand-painted in tempera on levkas over a wooden panel and protected by an elaborate embossed silvered-metal oklad (riza). Through carefully positioned openings, the painted faces and hands remain visible, creating a striking union between sacred painting and decorative metalwork. The subject, traditionally known as “Sergius’ Vision” (Сергиево Видение), carries powerful symbolism of faith, prayer, divine protection and spiritual guardianship. The composition became an established and important theme within Russian iconography. Condition: Fully hand-painted beneath the oklad. Age-related wear and paint losses are present, together with expected oxidation, rubbing and wear to the silvered-metal cover. The wooden panel displays natural signs of age, preserving the authentic devotional character of this antique icon.
