A powerful and deeply symbolic Russian icon depicting the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow”, one of the most beloved devotional subjects in Orthodox tradition. The Virgin is shown standing with open arms as an intercessor for humanity, surrounded by angels and groups of the afflicted—sick, poor, and suffering—each represented in detailed narrative scenes. This composition reflects the compassionate role of the Virgin as a source of healing and consolation, a theme especially prominent in late 19th century Russian iconography. The icon is executed in traditional egg tempera on wood, with a gesso ground and retains its original brass oklad with engraved floral decoration. The painting is entirely hand-crafted, with fine linear brushwork visible in the garments and figures. The complexity of the composition and the presence of inscriptions and multiple figures demonstrate its strong devotional purpose and artistic richness typical of provincial Russian workshops of the late Imperial period. The condition shows visible age-related wear, particularly in the central upper area and on the face of the Virgin, along with areas of paint loss and surface abrasion. There is no evidence of major modern restoration or overpainting, preserving the authenticity of the original surface. The panel remains structurally stable, with natural warping consistent with age, and the metal oklad shows minor dents from long-term use.
