A traditional Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Kazan Mother of God (Kazanskaya) with the Christ Child. This revered iconographic type is one of the most beloved images in Orthodox Christianity and symbolizes protection, guidance, and maternal compassion. The Virgin is shown in the characteristic half-length composition with the Christ Child blessing with his right hand. The painting shows classic Russian iconographic features with warm earth pigments, delicate facial modeling, and engraved halo outlines. The surface displays natural aging with craquelure and wear consistent with devotional use over time. The inscription below identifies the icon as"Kazanskaya Mother of God." The icon is painted on a wooden panel with a recessed central field (kovcheg), a traditional construction method used in Russian icons. The reverse shows an old wooden stabilizing slat and later rope hanger. Condition shows expected wear from age including surface abrasion and minor paint losses, which contribute to the authentic antique character of the piece.
