An impressive antique Russian Orthodox icon depicting Christ enthroned at the centre, surrounded by the Mother of God, saints and angelic figures. The elaborate multi-figure composition represents the heavenly court gathered around Christ in divine majesty. Executed in traditional egg tempera on wood, the icon displays the characteristic devotional style of 19th-century Russian icon painting, with Church Slavonic inscriptions, gilded halos and carefully articulated garments and faces. The icon has developed a powerful aged character over time. Despite the heavily darkened surface, the composition remains remarkably detailed, with the UV examination revealing the surviving underlying figures and facial features with much greater clarity. The icon remains in antique condition with extensive age-related wear, darkened varnish, craquelure, abrasions and areas of paint and gilding loss. These traces of time contribute strongly to its historical character. UV photography is included to document the surface and surviving painted details.
