A powerful and beautifully composed Russian icon centered on Archangel Michael, shown frontally holding the Mandylion (the Image of Christ Not Made by Hands), symbolizing divine protection and heavenly authority. He is flanked by four saints, including holy bishops and martyrs, each carefully inscribed in Church Slavonic. The strong red border, warm gold ground, and refined facial expressions reflect the devotional character of provincial Russian icon painting of the mid-19th century. The figures are elongated, with controlled brushwork and traditional egg tempera technique on wood panel. The composition carries both theological depth and strong visual balance, making it a spiritually and historically significant piece. The reverse shows an old wooden panel with original crossbars (shponki), natural aging, and consistent patina, confirming authentic 19th-century construction. Wear and surface craquelure are consistent with age.
